About Edgewater Mutual Aid Network
Edgewater Mutual Aid Network (EMAN) is a grassroots, volunteer, and non-hierarchical effort aiming to provide critical relief and engage in mutual aid practices with those in our community. Mutual aid isn’t charity—it’s a way of taking care of each other that recognizes that each of us has something to contribute.
EMAN began in 2020 to provide relief to the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, our mutual aid efforts attempt to address multiple crises that those in our community suffer from, doing what the government cannot or will not. We believe mutual aid to be one strategy that works within a larger movement to dismantle capitalism, white supremacy and heteropatriarchy.
We acknowledge the Anishinaabeg, Niswi-Mishkodewin (Council of the Three Fires): Ojibwe, Odawa & the Potawatami and dozens of other tribes as the original stewards of this land who were engaged in mutual aid practices and molded and cultivated this land that we now reside on.
The Values That Guide Us
We are committed to social justice, recognizing that some members of our community are subject to historic and ongoing intersectional prejudice, violence and inequity. We reject racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, classism and ableism, and do not tolerate expressions of bigotry.
